At the weekend I went to a button embroidery class at Loop run by Cecile: http://www.facilececile.com/ I hadn’t seen her work before but when I saw the picture Loop posted on Facebook of the buttons (the ones in the header in her website).  I really wanted to give it ago! (Aren’t they cute & amazing?!) And so even though it was a gloriously sunny day, I spent the majority of it inside, but I had a great time.

These are the two that I made:

It was very therapeutic doing all the stitches even if by the end of the day my back was killing me and my fingers hurt. (Its quite hard to sew properly when your fingers are sweating from the heat.)  I also met some other very lovely ladies and had a great time.

I also know I had more that I wanted to say on Saturday after the class, when I utterly exhausted and just collapsed watching Eurovision and didn’t write a blog post. (Why yes I do watch Eurovision, its cheesy fun.)

I do however now have a few ideas of how to ‘geek’ up such techniques,  just have to figure out quite what I’d do and what I’d use the things for. I mean further buttons? Christmas decorations? Embellishments on a wallet? (Although that would involve me sewing the thing first…) Its not like I don’t have enough things to do as is. Still we shall see. Perhaps I should finish some warhammer models first…

So I’ve very nearly finished my February Lady Sweater, I’ve got about half a sleeve left to knit, so I went out to buy some buttons today, because I’ve decided that I may well wear it to the Games Workshop Gamesday. Which means that I probably won’t have time to block it as I expect I’ll finish the sleeve on Thurs or Friday. In fact I’m a bit worried about blocking it, I’ve seen mention that it grows quite a bit with blocking, and I don’t think cotton will grow that much, but at the same time, its fitting pretty damn well at the moment. Oh well I don’t really think I can get away with never washing it. 😉

So buttons, what I tend to do is rummage through my mum’s tub of buttons, find one that’s the right size and then take that with me when I go button shopping, it’s the easiest way for me to know if the one’s I like are an ok size. The one that I found was this.

Its not actually a black button, its dark brown, and nice and chunky and a good contrast with the colour of the cardigan which is exactly what I wanted, too bad there was only one of them.

So I headed off to Liberty’s today, I always get nervous about going there, I think it’s because I haven’t gone very much and it is quite a pokey shop in some ways. Hard to find the stairs/lifts (well I know their at the back but still its not obvious like say the esculators in John Lewis). But they do have a much better button selection than JL. So I went in, hoping to find something the right size and a nice dark wood colour. Unfortuantly I didn’t find anything, but I did find these.

They are wood at least and the right size and gosh aren’t they CUTE?! I saw them hummed and ahh’ed a bit and then decided that yes I think they would go perfectly with the cardigan. 🙂  Although C has apparently told me that he doens’t like the cardigan.. he’s not sure if its because of the colour or because of.. well something else. Oh well he doesn’t have to wear it. 😛

(Btw I apologise for the quality of my spelling, for some reason my Firefox spell checker isn’t working and I have to confess I do rely quite heavily on it as I’m terrible at spelling.)

Also, I just had to post a quick screen shot of the Paralympics Medals table on the BBC. I doubt that’s where we’ll finish, but isn’t that bloody brilliant?! 😀 And amusingly I just heard that the GB team made sure to fly out Yorkshire Tea and Jaffa Cakes for the athletes as they were lacking from the facilities in Bejing.

I’m wondering if 2012 may become a bit of a disapointment, after all this? I hope not. 🙂 I’m definitly going to see some events then. It should be great fun! 🙂

Cardigans and graduation

So after a rather long stint (I say long stint.. i think it was only a couple of weeks) of not really having anything to knit and not really feeling like working on any of my WIPS. I finally got started on (as I mentioned in a previous post) and finished a cardigan. And I love it. 🙂

Pattern: Kaleidoscope and (non-Ravelry Pattern)

Yarn: NH Knitting Mama’s Moody Blues (Sock yarn)

Needles: 5MM

Isn’t it fab? I did get very worried at the blocking stage, the button holes were HUGE afterwards and there was no way it was going to stay done up (and I have to say it looks a bit funny not done up) but my mum is wonderful and reinforced the button holes for me to make them smaller. Now the buttons fit just fine. 🙂 (I got the buttons from John Lewis.)  I now absolutely love this cardigan, if I’m honest the shoulder bit is maybe a little too big, its supposed to sit low there but it ends up just falling off mine after a while. But oh well who cares, its one of the few things I’ve made so far that I will be able to get a lot of wear out.  Now I just need to get hold of some more tops that go with this. It just doesn’t look right with high round necked t-shirts.

Next project? Another cardigan, some gloves (not for me), scarf (again not for me) and a top (for which I have some purchased some really lovely merino from ColourMart, I can’t wait to get started on that, but I have to get started on these other things first!)

In other news my project, for the moment is going well. I’m pretty much at the write up stage with 3 weeks to go, and after having seen my project supervisor today well, I seem to be on track with the write up to. 🙂

And in additional news, I was originally informed that I wouldn’t be able to go to my graduation as it was in November and there just wouldn’t be enough time between handing in the project and getting the marks sorted before the ceremony. Well the ceremony has now been pushed back to December so I will now have a ceremony! Thank goodness for that, I may have to dress up in a silly gown and hat for the 2nd time in my life but its definitely worth it. No matter what grade I get in the end I’ve worked HARD for this damnit! 🙂
