The first great Tyranid Battle 22 March 2009

So I did my first proper Tyranid battle today, fighting C’s Eldar, and well.. initial reaction is, he pretty my decimated my troops with all his gun fire. I lost both unit’s of genestealers in his first shooting phase, (that included my poor Broodlord, he didn’t get to hit anything.) Then over the 4 turns that we played I proceded to lose almost a whole unit of Hormogaunts (1 survived), and a lot gaunts, 3 warriors and 2, YES TWO Carnifex’s. ALthough saying that I did very nearly did win, it was an objective match, I had one objectve, C had another, and before C’s last turn the last one was in contention between my carnifex and some of his troops, he managed however to kill that carnifex off with a power claw (he’d killed the other Carnifex in that fight off with a witch blade (that carnifex had taken damage previously before getting into that fight)). I rolled so badly for those two carnifex’s that it was almost laugable. I very nearly got a change to contend the objective C did have with my other carnifex, but by that point I had 1 Carnifex left, a smattering of Gaunts and 3 warriors, and well, he would have shot me to bits on his next turn.
So C did win that match, but it was quite a close run thing. What have I learnt from this? THat when I deploy, infiltration is probably going to get my genestealers killed, that I should stick all my gaunts in front, and probably have my Carnifex’s in front too, as they are quite hard to kill, and in theory (assuming the dice gods like you) they should hit quite hard. Oh also that the barbed strangler is a pretty good gun against guardians.
What I also realised would be useful during the fight would be a 3rd barbed strangerler, and also some deep striking units to hit C’s army from behind, so I now have a Lictor to build.. hehehe.

Not really got that much to say at the moment, it’s all been a bit hectic in someways as I fall into the rythem of getting up for work in the morning and then getting home. All this working means that trying to juggle this myraid of hobbies I have is a bit awkward (Still I’m earning money so this is not really a complaint). Tuesday evenings are taken up by role playing, we’ve just started a Scion game, which is proving to be quite fun, after only two sessions, after Xmas we’ll probably end up alternating between that and Dark Heresy if our two other players become less busy. But Scion is a lot of fun. (Sometimes I wonder what ‘normal’ people think when they hear what plots and plans we discuss, like hunting down serial killers, or trying to protect magical zombie raising chalices which people might think is the holy grail.)
My knitting has slowed down, although I think once I’ve settled in a bit more at work I’ll start taking some socks in, probably after xmas at this rate. Although saying that I think I’ve already settled in in some ways. They’ve all been so friendly, had my xmas meal with them yesterday and am taking part in secret santa. As a company they do have a lot of temps thou, so it’s quite nice.
Hmm what else? Ohh ack I’ve really been negleticting my librivox recording, and tbh I probably need to get up to date with some projects, chase up readers and such. (I think I meant to do some of this the other weekend but it slipped my mind, and I’ve got to find a secret santa gift this weekend).
Finally don’t even get me started on my Tyranids… I haven’t touched them in weeks (I also really need to get a case for them too.) Oh well it’ll get done at some point.. C just keeps hasseling me about it, but.. I do like my Tyranids and I do want to paint them (and well I want to get and paint a chaos army too) but… I want to knit.. and er.. Knitting kind of wins that fight. Plus its cold and dark and painting is fiddly.

Wow am I lazy, I’ve been meaning to make a post for days and I keep getting distracted, by Uni work, Dawn of War, Assassins Creed, Bioshock and Knitting. It was my bday a week or so ago so I have been making use of some of my presents. Also there IS knitting content in this post.. Its just hidden away at the bottom, so if your not interested in Warhammer 40k please do scroll down.
(Yes I realise that I came up with an immensely original title for this post..
)
Anyway here is another one of my presents:
Yes its a Tyranid Army, my wonderful boyfriend C did buy it for me.
I’ve calculated that with all the modifications that I can make to my Tyranids then I will have about a 1500 point army. Not bad considering I can have 3 Carnifex’s in that! ^_^ Its funny I’ve never really been into Warhammer stuff, I mean I’ve always sort of liked the idea of buying maybe a tank or a dragon or something just to paint. But now that I’ve started to get to know the 40k Universe, what with playing in the Dark Heresy RP game, Dawn of War and having C talk about it a lot. Its a really well thought out universe with crap loads of back story which just makes it much more alive, even if Humanity is on the verge of being overrun by.. lots of horrible things, Tyranids being just one of them.
The great thing about Tyranids is that I can effectively paint them anyway I want, many of the other armies are a bit more restricted, or at least it seems that way to me. I’ve had the idea for the colour scheme that I’d like to use for a while, I saw a picture that someone had drawn of a Weevil and went “Perfect”. It consisted of dark blue, light blue and some rather bright green. So I decided to assemble my very first Warhammer 40k model, a Tyranid Warrior.

Look at those Scything Talons! There is a set of smaller talons, which seems to be the ones on the Tyranid Warrior in their Codex, but seriously why wouldn’t you put those ones on? I mean Tyranids are supposed to be scary and those? Well I’d say their scary at least. Talons taller than it, in fact taller than a Genestealer!
Here’s my warrior with its base coat and the first layer of blue paint, I have to say it was really awkward getting the paint to go where it was needed. There are lots of crevice’s!
Jumping forward a few pictures (because really I don’t need to show them all now). Here is my finished Warrior.
(Yes I know its a really crappy picture, I’m really going to need to invest in a better camera, my phone camera is just not cutting it these days.)
Now I just have another 56 more models to paint!! Including 3 rather large Carnifex’s! Eeep!
And now onto the Knitting content.
I also got one of these for my birthday:
Yup a ball winder! I have to say it made winding a 460 yard skein of wool SOOOOOO much easier!
Getting this also meant that I could finally start on an item that’s been in my Ravelry queue for ages!
Pattern: Kaleidoscope Cardigan (Non-Ravelry Link)
Yarn: NH Knitting Mama’s Moody Blues (Sock yarn)
Isn’t the colour really pretty? And this pattern is so quick and easy! I only started this a few days ago and I’m just at the collar. All I have left to do is the sleeve and the button band (and to find some buttons) and then its pretty much done. Well.. It’ll need blocking, and I just seem to be so awful at getting things sorted to do my blocking! I mean I’ve finally finished knitting my Laminaria, in fact I finished that about a month ago, and I still have not blocked it, neither have I blocked a lace scarf that I finished about a week later.
