Food Glorious Food… 28 March 2009

So I’m coming up to a bit of a cross roads in my life, and to be honest I’m not quite sure what to do. I’m vegetarian, I have been sicne I was about 18, in fact this is the second time I’ve been veggi in my life. the first time was when I was 10 and that lasted hmm 4 years possibly. I became veggi that time becuase I’d been on a school trip to Pendarren, in Wales, and we’d been taken to an auction of farm animals, and well that rather put me off eating meat for a while. But then I started to miss bacon and I went back to eating meat, although funnily enough I mostly only ate chicken as I wasn’t even that big a fan of bacon.

The second time I became veggi was after I’d seen a programme on how they eat dogs in Korea. Now to my mind a dog is a cute animal used as a pet, possibly a work animal if it’s a husky or a sheep dog, but not really to be eaten. Thus I don’t really think I could ever bring myself to eat a dog, and yet I argued to myself, I can eat chickens because they are ugly?

To my mind, that was not a good argument , and so I became veggi.  And to be honest that’s been fine. Untill recently. I’ve come to the conclusion that a LOT of the veggi meat replacement stuff, just tastes like crap. And while quorn mince/pieces are alright, a) you really have to flavour them up as they don’t taste of anything and b) C doesn’t like it. So at the moment there is not much substance to our meals, pasta/rice and veg isn’t that filling. As C doesn’t like mushrooms either I’m starting to feel as if i’m lacking in proten a little bit too.

Watching cooking programes where they have a nice bit of meat in a delicious looking meal doesn’t help either. So maybe my solution is simple, I just start eating meat again, but in some ways I don’t really want to, plus it’s been so long since i’ve eaten meat that to be honest the thought of actually biting into a piece of meat is rather sickening.

I’m really not quite sure what to do, I guess just think it over a little more for now.

The first great Tyranid Battle 22 March 2009

So I did my first proper Tyranid battle today, fighting C’s Eldar, and well.. initial reaction is, he pretty my decimated my troops with all his gun fire.  I lost both unit’s of genestealers in his first shooting phase, (that included my poor Broodlord, he didn’t get to hit anything.) Then over the 4 turns that we played I proceded to lose almost a whole unit of Hormogaunts (1 survived), and a lot gaunts, 3 warriors and 2, YES TWO Carnifex’s.  ALthough saying that I did very nearly did win, it was an objective match, I had one objectve, C had another, and before C’s last turn the last one was in contention between my carnifex and some of his troops, he managed however to kill that carnifex off with a power claw (he’d killed the other Carnifex in that fight off with a witch blade (that carnifex had taken damage previously before getting into that fight)).  I rolled so badly for those two carnifex’s that it was almost laugable.  I very nearly got a change to contend the objective C did have with my other carnifex, but by that point I had 1 Carnifex left, a smattering of Gaunts and 3 warriors, and well, he would have shot me to bits on his next turn.

So C did win that match, but it was quite a close run thing. What have I learnt from this? THat when I deploy, infiltration is probably going to get my genestealers killed, that I should stick all my gaunts in front, and probably have my Carnifex’s in front too, as they are quite hard to kill, and in theory (assuming the dice gods like you) they should hit quite hard.  Oh also that the barbed strangler is a pretty good gun against guardians. :)

What I also realised would be useful during the fight would be a 3rd barbed strangerler, and also some deep striking units to hit C’s army from behind, so I now have a Lictor to build.. hehehe.

And again its been way to long since I last updated, I keep saying to myself, oh I should blog this or that, but thats usually on the train to/from work and by the time I get home it’s slipped my mind or I can’t be bothered. Admitidly I’ve had a good excuse recently as I’ve finally moved out of my parents house and into my own flat with C.  It’s quite a nice flat, seperate bedroom to the kitchen, and with a reasonable amount of space. Although once we moved in we realised that it was quite dirty in places, whoever lived here before us was a bit of a slob, as there was bubble gum sticking a door mat to the floor, disgustingly dirty microwave and oven. But we’ve got things cleaned now and are settling in. The real big annoyance was the lack of phone line into the place, apparently when it was done up, the old phone lines were ripped up and the new ones were negletced, so we’ve gotten a mobile broadband package and are just going to do it that way, as in some ways its just easier.

On the knitting front I’ve FINALLY been able to start Vivian, my mum ordered the yarn for me for Xmas, but the company didn’t have enough, so she had to cancel the order and then re-order later. So I finally got the yarn a few weeks ago. Although I must confess I’ve made quickish progress on the top, I’m almost up to the sleeves. :) I’m really enjoying the knit, there’s been a few places where I wasn’t quite sure what to do, but it’s going well so far, and the yarn is quite lovely. I’m using Louet, Riverside Chunky yarn in charcoal. (I am not yet set up in my new place to sort out taking photo’s and uploading them to flickr yet.)

In reply to Amy A’s comment on my about page, I do really mean to record some more stuff for librivox, I just have to many hobbies at the moment. Plus I need an actual computer to record onto, although I’m hoping to get that sorted.

Ack this is a bit of a jumpy post, as I’m just not really sure what to talk about at the moment, plus C wants his laptop back.
