Gosh I was just perusing this list over at IMDB of what is coming out this year and there is a LOT of films that I’d really like to see!
- Jan
- Sweeny Todd - Already seen this was brilliant! You should def go see this, very fun to watch, if a little bit gory in places.
- Sweeny Todd - Already seen this was brilliant! You should def go see this, very fun to watch, if a little bit gory in places.
- Feb - nothing leaps out at me
- March
- The Other Boleyn Girl - Its based on a book and looks like it could be an interesting movie. On a side note I am amused by being told on IMDB that the synopsis of the story could contain spoilers… I mean honestly how is this: “Both women shall share the King’s bed, but only the one whom Henry loves the most shall rise to the throne and take power as his Queen of England. One sister shall fail, and the other will pay a high-price for her success: her life. But which sister shall it be?” any kind of spoiler to most people??
- April - nothing leaps out at me
- May
- IRON MAN hehe not that I know much about the comic, but I have been told its one of the best and this looks good!
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Its Indy, what can I say? Although I confess I have not seen a trailer yet.
- June
- The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian - wheee! Ok so the first one wasn’t the best thing every but I enjoyed it. So looking forward to this.
- The Incredible Hulk - Actually I really hate the Hulk, and I have no intention of seeing this, I’m more just perplexed as to why they have made another Hulk movie..? It doesn’t even seem to be a sequal of whatever that one back in 2002(?) was…
- The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian - wheee! Ok so the first one wasn’t the best thing every but I enjoyed it. So looking forward to this.
- July
- The Dark Knight - YEAH!! Trailer looks good! I can’t wait.
- Aug
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Again not seen tralier but, wheee!
- Also another X-Files film? And a 3rd The Mummy film..(ugh)?
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Again not seen tralier but, wheee!
- Sept - nothing leaps out at me
- Oct - nothing leaps out at me
- Nov
- Quantum of Solace - James Bond. Daniel Craig. ‘Nuff said.
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - It’s Harry Potter and I’m a geek. ‘Nuff said again.
- Quantum of Solace - James Bond. Daniel Craig. ‘Nuff said.
- Dec
- Star Trek - hehe!
That’s a LOT of films! A LOT of rather big name films! Ok so said films could still be rubbish, just because they are big name films doesn’t necessarily mean they are good films. Still I stand by the fact that it’s a lot of films for 1 year! ![]()
Game levels 30 January 2008

So as part of my reading for my MSc project I have been told to read Game Level Design by Ed Bryne, its actually quite an interesting read, and has prompted me to think a bit differently about game levels. And particular about some game levels that I have played.
Vampire:the Masquerade - Bloodlines
Well, most people know that this is a buggy game anyway, *cough* crashing out to desktop at a certain bit of the game *cough*, it was rushed at release, and clearly poorly beta tested. But that’s not what I was going to discuss. There is one level in the game were you end up in the sewers, having to face these strange monsters, that are made up of bits of people and creatures and reanimated by some evil Vampire. (If you’ve played this then I’m talking about the area with the strange women’s bodies on spider like bodies. Horrid things!) And as I was playing through the game as a Ventrue I found this level EXTREMELY difficult, I am now better able to identify why that is the case.
The book talks about needing to make levels challenging, and yet not so challenging that players get pissed off. That you need to offer options to different types of players, one example the book gives is allowing players either to take a lift shaft or to take the stairs, where perhaps the stairs have more enemies for the more combat inclined.
Now in Bloodlines you can in theory, specialise your character, make them more combat orientated, stealthy, talkative etc etc etc. However if you are anything but seriously gun combat orientated or stealthy then this level is a nightmare! Now with my Ventrue I’d gone towards swords, a bit of stealth and I think decent persuasion type abilities.
So you can imagine my terror when I first get to the level and fight one of these women-spider things with my sword and get slaughtered. I had to get my guns out and run around backwards shooting it, I think this is the only way I defeated it. This was only a sign of things to come, the level is horribly populated with those things, and it is also a bad level to navigate, I kept getting lost, and dead. And as a Ventrue I cannot get blood from rats, and thus using my powers was a PITA.
I finally reloaded the level and uped my stealth quite high. It was the only way. And thus heart in mouth, I snuck past these monsters, until i finally came to one that completely blocked the pathway to the ONLY WAY OUT. Somehow, I crept past it, only mere inches away! And then bolted for the exit. But I was lucky, I only had to boost my stealth by one, to do this level, what do people do who are less combat/stealth orientated? It was indeed a very frustrating level, and a reasonable example of poor level design.
Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the PoP games, (well less number 2 but..) its fun to run around as the Prince (monkey boy that he is) the mix of puzzles and combat is generally pretty good.
But there is one level in the game that strikes me as rather poor design. You start in a chariot and it ends at the the 3rd (out of 4) boss fight in the game. However this fight is, I feel the hardest boss fight of the whole game! And when you die you have to repeat the chariot section ALL OVER AGAIN! Once I’d done the chariot part of the level several hundred times (a bit of an exagguration but it was a lot) this was less of an issue, but it is a long chariot section, and is hard to master. Especially when you end up using all your sand in that section and thus have none left for the horrid boss fight. It was not fun.
It took me so long to get past that boss fight too. Was so very hard. I feel that quite possibly they game should have separated these section. Possibly if you loaded from your save, start from the chariot race, but if your in the same game and haven’t just turned on the machine, then when you die in the boss fight, you should re-spawn at the start of the boss fight. It would have made life easier. Although possibly annoying if you have no sand left? Hmmm. Perhaps that was a factor in making the level the way it was.
Um anyway I think I have waffled enough, I should get back to reading!
I am cold. 29 January 2008

In fact scratch that.. I am very very very very very cold, almost freezing in fact. At some point yesterday the heating went off, it took a while for me to notice though. My radiator is a little crazy and a slight turn on the dial makes it get very hot in my room, so I tend to have it low, however as I was cold I did turn it up… and then wondered why I was STILL cold much later. My mum mentioned some pump had gone in the boiler… I don’t know if that means we don’t have hot water, although we did seem to have a bit of some earlier, so maybe its just the heating, I haven’t had a chance to ask.
But right now, I have a long sleeve top, a jumper, a thick fleecy jumper AND my dressing gown wrapped around me. Fingerless gloves, and am contemplating a second pair of socks, even with the slippers on. Also thankfully for once I am appreciating the extra heat from my PC. It is cold.
Hopefully gas man will turn up tomorrow to fix!
In other news, I went to see the lecturer I’m going to do my MSc project with, and mentioned that the book she suggested I read had not turned up yet, so she very kindly lent me her copy. However sod’s law my copy turned up this morning! Isn’t that typical?
And finally, I was at Hyde Park station on Sat, going to get on the tube with my bf, when this lady, who had a pushchair and a kid to get down the escalators, asked me to hold her child’s hand down the escalator! I did find it odd that she asked a perfect stranger to hold her child’s hand! But at the same time my mum did point out that managing to hold a pushchair on the escalator is an awkward thing, and you do need to know how to handle it. (Otherwise there is the possibility of a lawsuit… hence why TFL staff don’t help.)

I have the feeling that I am one of the youngest people on my MSc course, and one of the few people who doesn’t have a ‘real’ job. And sometimes I really feel that lack of experience, especially now in my Project Management module, all the other people work in business they have experience of this kind of thing.. What do I have? It’s a little intimidating at times.
Take today for example, the lecturer asked us if any of us had experience managing a project. And she looked at me (curse the fact that my name is easy to remember AND that I generally sit in the front of the class).
Lecturer: Liz, what about you? What sort of projects have you worked on.
Me: Damnit don’t ask me.. ack ack, what have I worked on? Librivox sort of counts I guess but a book project is kind of small does it count? Should I mention it??
Me: *shakes head*
Lecturer: Are you sure? What about a wedding, or a party…?
Me: Ack… ok.. so I’ll mention Librivox.
Me: Um.. I do some volunteer work for Librivox, we record audio books, its a sort of.. um.. group effort…
Lecturer has baffled look on her face.
Me: Um…
Lecturer: But how is this a project.
Me: Uh, we have different readers and er.. we release the books.
Lecturer: Ahh, yes so book releases, film releases that also is a project.. (etc etc rest of lecture)
Me: Ack ack!
I swear next time I’m going to go into the furthest part of the room and hide, its just scary! So very scary!
Abilities I wish I had! 24 January 2008

I’d just like to point out that these are abilities I’d like that would in theory make my life easier, and are not necessary the powers I’d choose if I was a superhero. In fact I’m really not sure what power I’d have if I was a superhero, there’s just so much to choose from!
Anyway in no particular order here is my list of things:
- A CTRl+F ability in my brain! (Or the ability to read like Superman!) Remeber all those annoying times when you know you’ve read something and you just can’t find it! Gone in a flash! Just a quick scan and bingo there’s the sentence your looking for. Oh how useful it’d be.
- Camera’s in my eyes. The other day in my Database Admin lecture my lecturer was drawing lots of time consuming diagrams, which I couldn’t be bothered to copy (the concept was reasonably simple) and it just make me wish I could just take a picture with my eyes, it’d make my life so much simpler.
- 4 arms. Actually I’ve long (Since 2003) been of the belief that 4 arms would make our lives much easier, attempting to answer the phone/get our your oyster card/keys when you’re carrying lots of shopping? No problem! Even opening doors wouldn’t be an issue. I could happily knit and drink my tea at the same time! Oh life would be good.
- Finally, the ability to walk through things, walls/people actually especially people. I walk fast, and thus slow walkers annoy me, along with people who JUST STOP in the middle of crowds. If I could walk through people I could.. well just walk through them! No more fighting the crowds!
And I’m sure there are many other powers which would make life easier, for now these are the main ones.
And ok enough with the sillyness!
In other news I’m stil behind on the evil bodice, by 6 stitches, I did 4 the other day. I must get too it! Also only another 20 (i think) rows to go on my t-shirt! yaaay!
the only real worry with that is how it’ll look once it’s blocked! It fits very well at the moment.
Also the thought of would it be possible to make a Tachikoma as knitted/crochet toy? has occurred to me. Possibly, I’ve really no idea though.
Charity Shops, such fab places 22 January 2008

So I’ve had a bit of an issue with clothing recently, losing weight is not particularly great for the bank balance, hence the beauty of charity shops. Especially charity shops positioned in wealthy parts of town.
For less than £20 I have purchased 4 tops, 1 skirt and 2 book. 2 of the tops were Marks and Spencers so you know that initially they would have probably cost £20 each, plus one of them still has its ticket! It’s never even been worn! (An unwanted xmas pressi I suspect?) The skirt is from Monsoon, again pricey. So its all good!
However I did also spot loads of really cool coloured knit where (in designs I didn’t like.. but good colours!) and I know from Ravelry that people often by charity shop jumpers, rip them up and re-use the wool in another project. And this sounds like such a good idea, a decent way to get cheap wool, its.. just all a bit well.. daunting. I mean you have to know how to deal with the seams and where to cut it in order to frog it and get the wool out. I may have to read up on this process a bit more, because it would be neat to do.
Lol are you all bored to tears yet? Here I am talking about shopping in a blog post.
In more interesting news, my current knitting project(the T-shirt) is very nearly finished, my aim to knit 2 rows a day on the evil bodice is failing, I’m 6 rows behind! ( Yeah.. I should do some knitting on that today) and I also may have something sorted for my MSc project. Yay.
I hate technology at times! 21 January 2008

Sometimes the whole technology having a mind of its own thing really pisses me off. Yesterday I brought out my GameCube for the first time in months, so that I could play some Super Smash Bro’s with Caleb. After brief moment of ‘Ack no sound with the cube! don’t be broken please!’ I fiddled around with the cables and realised that luckily it was just that a scart cable wasn’t quite plugged in properly.
However in the middle of playing a game my digi set top box decides to turn itself on, (It was on standby) and tells me that it needs to reinstall all the channels. Err.. what?? Ok so fine it’s had a bizarre attack of amnesia… so I say ok reinstall the channels - that you shouldn’t have lost in the first place because I DID NOT restart you.
So it reinstalls the channels, (yay?) and then… THEN it tells me it needs to install the guide, and to make sure I don’t see this same ‘install guide screen’ every time, I must leave the set top box in standby mode and not turn anything off at the plug. What…?! WHAT?!?!?! You do realise that appliances USE UP electricity in standby mode?! RIGHT?! So you want me to bascially burn up more of our electricity so that I don’t have to keep reinstalling this guide. Also when I did install the guide its not the normal guide that I’m used to but some bloody Virgin sponsored thing!
And actually the Virgin thing annoyes me, but does not piss me off nearly as much as this ridiculas I’m not allowed to turn everything off at the plug thing. Excuse me I do like to try and do my little bit for the environment, which means I like to NOT leave things in standby mode.
I just don’t get what’s changed, its the SAME digi box I’ve had since last summer. It worked, it was good, I could turn it on and off a the plug as often as I liked, my tv guide was just there when I pressed the guide button on my remote. NOW?! Now apparently some retard has decided that I must reinstall it EVERY TIME… Thats like telling me to reinstall Firefox or iTunes every time I turn my PC on and I want to use it. What crap.
Sorry, as you can tell I’m rather pissed off about it all.
Edit: It is in fact just a glorified Teletext thing and I guess just Virgin are paying for ad space, so its nothing to do with Virgin in that sense. I have now also figured out how to get the old generic guide back. Which I do much prefer, apparently the Teletext extra, is just an enhanced service. But still I find it very annoying that I can’t just turn things off at the mains, thus saving a bit of electricity.
Cirque du Soleil - Varekai 20 January 2008

I’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil production before so I was quite excited to see this one. People doing crazy acrobatics is always fun (if a bit scary at times) to watch! I have to confess that I didn’t quite get the story line, though its seems fairly simplisticish now that I’ve read this. (Or its possibly more complex but I just didn’t get a lot of it?) But the acts were amazing, and a couple of times I did hold my breath as you go ‘argh what if they miss?!’
Although at the same time I think I prefer musicals over crazy circus type things, it just feels more engaging.
On another note while I had a really got time at the show, the walk back to the station just pissed me off. I do not appreciate people stopping right in front of me. And perhaps this is lazyness but neither do I appreciate big groups of people stopping right at the entrance to the tube so taht I have to take the less efficient way around. Neither do I appreciate people deciding to just stand at the ENTRANCE of the platform, when there is masses of space down the platform, I don’t appreciate them all just milling about there either so that I can’t get past to get to the less crowded part. URGH!! I wish people would use their brains sometimes (I can dream can’t I?). The end of the platform furthest from the entrances is generally ALWAYS pretty empty so just move down! *grumble*
People can be so annoying. ![]()
The Bodice of Evvviiilllll! 18 January 2008

On Librivox we currently have a special rules knitting project. We’re recording Exercises in Knitting by Cornelia Mee, but not only are we recording it we’re also knitting the patterns from the book and translating them to modern day pattern speak. I decided to do the Knitted Bodice pattern, as it’s a fairly simple one to follow, and handily I had a big ball of horribly bright red acrylic that well.. it wasn’t going to be used for anything else really. I actually managed to get a LOT of it done, and then.. well then November came, then I decided to knit Juno Regina, and I knew that that would take a lot of time and so I didn’t really have time for any other projects.
This photo below isn’t the most up todate, the bit on the needles is actually almost as long as the opposite side, I’m about 40 rows away from finishing.

And here, here is where I’ve hit problems, I just can’t be bothered to get back to it. Its cheap acrylic, its not nice to knit with, also its pretty much ALL stockinette stitch, so its horribly horribly boring. It’s also TINY, me and my mum figure it would have to be a child’s garment, cause there is no way I can see it fitting a fully grown woman. It’s DK (i think) wool, knitted on 3.25mm needles.
But yet I only have 40 rows left? So not that many when you consider I’ve already knitted around 140 rows already. I have no excuses! If i can just force myself to knit a minimum of 2 rows a day. I’ll get somewhere.. I HAVE to make myself do that, I have to finish this thing!
So for those of you who read this blog, (if any?) you have my permission to bug me into making sure I get this FINISHED!!

In truth the word gloves should also be included in the post title.. but as I have no photo’s of the gloves in question, there’s no real point blogging about them yet is there?
Anyway the hat in question is this one. It looked like a fun easy knit, and was totally something a friend of mine would wear and thus I could justify getting the wool and knitting it. It was Christmas after all.
Yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers - Turquoise colour
And here it is in all its glory. I have to confess that trying to do the lacy bit on dpns was a bit of a pain in the arse, but once I got the hang of it it was all good. Took maybe half a day to knit? So pretty quick too.
And below you can see her modelling it, ahh I’m sure she’ll appreciate me posting this photo.
I think I used about half of the Cascade, not quite sure what to do with the rest, I did knit this for myself on my hellish train journey to and from Liverpool at new years (thanks Network Rail, really appriciate your inability to stick to a timetable). But I a) think its too big and b)eh.. might do something else with it.. not sure what though. I know I’m going to get some more cascade 220 in white/cream colour for another hat for another friend, and I suspect I’ll have some of that left over. So maybe I can do something with the two of them. But we’ll see.
Now on to my top. I be knitting Maddy by Cyn. I found the pattern back around the summer (I think) and really liked it. Although funnily enough when I opened my Christmas present that had the yarn I’d asked for I couldn’t initially remember what I’d wanted it for.
Yarn: Oasis Solid Soy Silk - Sapphire
I’m not really going to say much on this because I’d like to do that in one big post, but I felt the need to at least have an update to show off how far I’ve gotten, its nearly there.
Please excuse the awfulness of the photo. I need to try it on again really, also am semi worried about how much this yarn will drape once it’s blocked. Will have to wait and see I guess. :S (fingers crossed that it’ll be all right…)
