Ok so this is a bit of a sarcastic post, but i just read this on the BBC website. And wtf? Leaves = Litter?? What you going to go do next, fine trees? And obviously Leaves aren’t biodegradable either.. *sigh* It’s litter fining taken to extremes! It’s like the time they were going to fine a mother because her toddler dropped some crisps on the ground, IIRC she did clean some up at the time but not all, and they were going to fine her because of that.
Least the council apologised.
I wonder if you could make it into some kind of crazy reality game show?
<Deep Voice Over> Hello and Welcome to the final of EXTREEEEMMMEEE Litter Fines! Tonight our contestants face their toughest challenges yet, to see who can get fined for the most craziest act!</Deep Voice Over>
No? Ah well. It was just an idea. ![]()
Knitting, Data Warehousing & John Lewis 28 November 2007

Why yes actually I can and am about to make a post linking those 3 topics. Ok so knitting and John Lewis (Hereafter referred to as JL) is easy, seeing as JL sells knitting supplies. But datawarehousing? Well let me take a few steps back first.
At some point at the start of last year (2006) JL Oxford street moved its haberdashery department from the ground floor to the fourth floor. The fourth floor being the floor that sells all the kiddies stuff from clothing, to toys, to school wear. And at the time (well while I worked there in the summer) I did speculate that the reason they moved the department was to create more foot traffic. I mean if you figure that most people buying stuff from habby are women, then well ground floor you have a maze of jewellery, bags, tights, perfumes, make up to navigate, then 1st floor ladies wear, i forget what’s on the 2nd, but 3rd is furniture and then 4th finally habby!
And at the time it did also occur to me that people who come to buy knitting supplies sometimes get stuff to knit for little ‘uns. Soo you can try and tempt them with cute looking kiddy clothes to. (This is also obviously why you have to walk THROUGH toys to get to school wear, obvious marketing strategy there).
Obviously though a lot of people did complain about having to go up 4 flights of escalators, especially if they just wanted one real (sp?) of cotton. Although I have to point out that the whole reason I’m now so into knitting is all because of JL having habby on the 4th floor! When you’re working on the tills and you see all the awesome knitting/habby stuff that people buy it really makes you want to get creative! But I digress.
So what’s all this got to do with data warehousing I hear you ask? Everything really. To put it simply companies (should) use Data Warehousing & Data Mining to monitor how they are doing. A good example is supermarkets (Tesco’s) they use data warehousing to know what products are selling, what types of customer (single female, professional, student etc) are buying what. It helps them to tailor what they sell, to increase their profits and to try beat the competition.
So it occurred to me during my Data Warehousing lecture to day. I wonder if JL did any sort of knowledge discovery (the top level decisions that are made based on the data they have and such) on moving habby to the 4th floor. And I wonder what their reasons were and whether it’s actually worked. Obviously it’s not an answer I’ll ever get, but it did just pop into my head.
Also.. if their argument is that it’s grannies who are mostly doing the knitting and who might get enticed by cute kiddy clothes/toys then.. well if Ravelry is anything to go by, then that isn’t really an accurate picture. But then perhaps you’ve got lots of young people knitting and you ARE making them trek through all the other things that people tend to buy.. so perhaps it’s not so crazy? Who knows, who knows.
I must say that Data Warehousing (even though it’s a real pain to understand and such) is really a pretty interesting subject, really makes you think on WHY companies sell stuff they way they do and such. Although I’m really not sure I’d want to be a consultant for it, even if my lecturer keeps pointing out that the bonuses you can make are INSANE (although not as insane as the profits you could make a company), because the job just sounds sooo stressful! You have to make the right decisions or else your out. What company is going to keep a consultant who loses them money?
Hmmm… a bit of a random topic methinks?

So this is a BBC programme thats been on after Breafast news this week. And while it is kind of interesting, for instance I learnt yesterday that Special K has as much sugar as Ice Cream! It’s also a rather silly programme in some respects. Today the presenter is focusing on ready meals (yesterday it was take aways) and he’s going on about the horror of people eating ready meals and how he’d never eat one. And yet yesterday he was admitting that he eats take aways. Now… Surely eating a ready meal is better than a take away??
And fair enough he does have a point about how people cooking ready meals means that they aren’t cooking from scratch, and that they quite possibly aren’t passing on cooking skills to their children beyond ‘Look the Microwave makes food quickly’. But surely you have the same effect with getting take aways?
It just sort of annoyed me that he’s making a good point by picking on ready meals in particular. And tbh I think its quite a silly programme, bring back To Buy or Not to Buy, that was MUCH more interesting!
Edit to add: In fact its VERY anti-ready meal, and yet yesterday they were wondering around Kensington with KFC dressed up as a posh restaurant chicken dish and fooling people who thought it was nice restaurant chicken ( to prove that take away food can taste good.. or something). Yes ok they did mention that take away does have a lot of fat and it is bad for you, but there was MUCH less of an anti-take away feel than there is for the ready meal.

(wow full of posts in the last few days. Now question is will I finish this one before I need to go uni?)
So I saw this pattern and went ‘OOOHHHH thats Lovely! I have to make that!’ And so printed off a copy of the pattern, and took it with me to my LYS, with barely even a clue about what yarn I needed. I was vaugly aware that the one I picked out was probably thicker than the one recommended in the pattern, but it wasn’t till I joined Ravelry that I really began to understand about all the various yarns. (And in fact that place makes it soooo easy to check just what sort of weight a yarn is considered. I love it.. anyway I digress slightly).
So here’s the very start, the first bit of lacing I’ve ever done, it took me a fair while to actually understand how the pattern worked, I’ve since realised that if I’d known about/used stitch markers this bit may well have been slightly easier, as I wouldn’t have had to stop and count a lot.

The ribbing bit was fun, and I love how it came out. I’m actually wondering about trying to do something similar for a belt/corsetty thing. Except right now I don’t have much time to think about it, but maybe over xmas, we’ll see.
And so onto the top. Not much to say here. Although I feel I should point out that I was by this time going ‘arrrrggghh Not enough Wool arrghhh!’. Obviously because I’m using something that’s super bulky instead of just bulky i get less wool for 50g, but still it was a bit disheartening, I had to make 2 more trips to the LYS to get enough Wool!
The sleeves I think were the most horrendous part of this whole thing. The acutal knit was fine, it was the sewing them to the main body that caused the big issues. My mum was wonderful did all the sewing for me (i’m awful at sewing)! however we realised that my cast off was rather tight, and so there was a stretch to make the arms fit into the arm holes. After a bit of fiddling, a lot of “Gaah!! The yarn is splitting!! Doooom!” and some help from people at Ravelry, the sleeves are finally sewed in. Of course now I’m wishing I hadn’t done the ribbing at the start of the sleeve. But maybe that’s something I’ll fix when i’ve got a bit more confidence at messing about with yarn.
Final picture of the completed top. I love the shape of this and such but oh gosh, I wore it to uni today and its just soooo damn warm (my own fault for using super bulkey I guess :P)
It’s been a good (if expensive) learning curve. I now feel rather more confident about what to knit and what yarn to use (mostly from having Ravelry there to help out).
Finishing Books… 22 November 2007

So on my commute to uni and back I take a book with me to read, I really wish I could listen to Librivox books while travelling but I find that London is too damned noisy to hear what’s being said. Just walking down a main road is bad enough with all the car noise but actually on the Tube? As mentioned here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7078882.stm “A report from the Noise Association this month says that sound levels on the Piccadilly Line of London’s underground can exceed that of a jet taking off at Heathrow Airport.”
This means I have to listen to music, otherwise I’d miss all the important/exciting bits in audio books! Which means I take a real physical book with me, my problem comes when I get near the end of said book. I know that I won’t have enough book to read for the journey to uni and back, so I take it out my bag and replace it with something else, with the intention of finishing the book at home. Well intention is all very well and good but have I had much luck? No… I currently have several books, Wuthering Heights, Neverending Story (re-read), A Game of Thrones (re-read) sitting on my book pile waiting for me to finish. Now as the second two are re-read’s that isn’t so bad, but.. I really should finish Wuthering Heights!
I also need to find some way of protecting said books in my bag.. they get rather bashed up! ![]()

An update to my previous post Previous Post So skimming through the points in PM’s question time I thought I’d pull out a few things. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7105520.stm
The two most worrying being:
- Mr Brown said the proper procedures had not been followed - the data should not have been accessed by unauthorised staff, it should not have been removed without the proper authority and it should not have been sent without being encrypted.
- When the National Audit Office asked for “narrow details” which did not include bank details, they were told it would be “too burdensome” for HMRC to comply, said Mr Leigh. He asked Mr Brown if the problems could have been caused by an increase in the workload at HMRC coupled with a cut in the number of staff.
WTF?
May I point out two of the points in the DPA? Again?
adequate, relevant and not excessive;
kept secure;
This is the law, THE LAW, you can’t just ignore it because you think its too much hassle. It is not an option.
The whole system clearly needs a complete over haul… and I could go on ranting except I have coursework to finish.

I think possibly the best words I have to describe how i feel about the following is shocked and appalled. But maybe if I pull out a thesaurus I’ll get some other good words.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7103566.stm
The personal details of 25million people in the UK have gone missing.. its pretty mind numbing in its enormaty. I just checked google, and the UK has a population of around 60mil, soo.. thats almost HALF the entire population. Also having just finished a piece of coursework about the Data Protection Act (DPA) I have a much finer appreciation for how all this stuff SHOULD work, and so like I said I’m pretty appalled. The DPA is there for a reason and government agencies need to follow the law as much as private companies.
And I shall split the post here as its a bit long….
Access and USB issues… 16 November 2007

*Note Major Rant*
UGH! I am really loathing Access at the moment, we’re having to use it as part of our Data Warehousing coursework to create a ROLAP application to show the managers in our case study why they should use Data Warehousing, and the reason we students are using Access for this (as its not really designed for it) is to understand where the data comes from etc. Ok fine, I can understand that.
But can someone please tell me why Access feels the need to constantly screw up the data that we’ve put into it?! We have over 2000 rows of data (which doens’t make much sense but thats another issue altogether), it has been carefully set up so that certain bits of the data aren’t repeated etc. So WHY when we export it and reimport it (its group work we’ve all done bits of stuff) WHY does it MESS it ALL up.
For example we have a scenario (1) we have a customer (1) we have a store (1) and we have 4 different products for this. which means that for each month we have an entry PER PRODUCT. so i should only have FOUR entries for month ONE…. WHY then does access decide to give me 16 entries?! Why does it decide to completely rewrite our columns? WHY WHY WHY??????? !!!! GAH!!!
And then theres my USB key… I decided to buy myself a new USB key, a nice 2gig one (I currently only had a 128mb key) however most USB key’s these day’s come with this U3 technology. Which sounds neat but is driving me up the damned wall! I put plug my USB key in and have to wait for the whole sodding thing to initialise. Also I’m mainly using this at uni so that I can copy stuff I do there in case I need it at home. So the current process is plug USB key in, wait 5 mins while it sorts the U3 stuff out, only then can i put my files on to it.
But then there’s the hiccups… I plugged it into one machine, and managed to crash it, I plugged it into another, it froze up, when i pulled the key out machine shut down, and then today it froze the machine up and lost the explorer bar, when i pulled out the USB key the machine was fine again. *sigh* not really very portable is it?

I feel I have to mention the awesomeness that is Ravelry. A brief description is that it is sort of social networking for knitters, and yet, and yet it is soooo much more.
It has an awesome resource for browsing patterns and seeing what other people have done with said patterns, thus allowing you to see what different types of wool and things can be done with a pattern!
I can browse yarns and easily find out what weight a yarn is considered as and thus know if i’m using something that works as a suitable replacement. Which is sooo awesome especially when your just starting out and don’t really understand much at all!
Plus there’s handy forums to go to if I need help.
It’s all so nicely packaged together.
I love it!

University work is starting to get really hectic, more hectic then it ever felt at Keele, which is strange, but then I wonder if that’s because a lot of it is group work and not individual work like problem sheets (which are ‘easy’ to get done in a day). So I thought I’d list what I’ve got to do to try and organise my mind:
1) Data Warehousing coursework: Group Work: Due Next Thursday - getting there slowly I think
2) Corporate Systems: Group Work: Due Next Thursday - well we’ve done our ERD so I think we’re almost there. Not to worried about this.
3) Distrbuted Sys: Group Work: Due 13th Dec - gah Java programming, soo eh it doesn’t seem hard in principle its just getting the coding right. will be a pain like programing usualy is!
4) DB Lang: Individ? Group? No idea, will probably be given out today…
5) Data warehousing: out next week? Extended work on current coursework (gah.. hate this stuff)
6) Corporate Sys: Individual? Probably given out next week?
7) DB Lang Coursework and Test - work and revise over xmas due in in jan (phew.. bit of a breather with those two!)
8) Some silly presentation for project module: 10th Dec
Gosh thats a lot…. Also I need to start reading up on published papers and such to get some idea for what I could do project wise in the summer >_< as need to write some kind of draft proposal over xmas. Oh man that’s a lot of work.
