A bit of a pointless post on Apperance? 26 September 2007

It’s strange but when I was in secondary school I could never understand why some of my friends wore make up everyday. It just seemed to me that make up should be more of a thing to wear when you’re going out on a special occasion, like a party, date, theatre etc. And yet now I couldn’t imagine going out without foundation on at least, and maybe a bit of blusher/mascara.

Actually now I’ve typed that even then thats not really a huge amount, I mean it seems it to me, but I have some friends who tend to wear eyeshadow/eyeliner almost every day too.

But it has occurred to me how you really do get influenced by your environment, and the people you spend time with. When I was at Keele, I didn’t really wear any make up, but then a lot of the people I hung out with either wore very minimal make up or none at all, and so I guess in some ways there isn’t a sort of pressure (albeit unconscious) of wanting to fit in. And yet when I came back to London for the summer, and particularly when I was working at John Lewis, you are surrounded much more, at work and on the Tube, by people who wake up and put their face on every day, and you start to feel like you should look as good. Hmm I don’t mean that to sound in a negative way or anything just not sure how else to phrase it.

But it is interesting to note that last year, during the summer (in london) I did start to make more of an effort to ‘look good’ and then when I went off to Canada, this sort of died off after a while.

Hmm I started writing this last night and even at the time i felt that using the term ‘looking good’ was NOT the term I wanted to use, as I really don’t want it to seem like I’m saying that the people who aren’t wearing make up don’t look good. Perhaps a better choice of phrase would be ‘dressing up’? However as it’s taken me a day to think on this I think I’ve sorta lost the plot of my little waffle.

I think it was essentially to point out that its quite interesting that now I’m living in London I spend more time preening and making sure I’m somewhat ‘dressed up’ when going out, unlike when I was at Uni in Keele.

So now that I’m a student at a London University I can qualify for a Student Oyster card (Yay!) which will give me 30% off the cost of weekly/monthly travel cards. As Westminster has just it up so you can apply online for one i figured that would be easier and thus beat the queues. So I applied on Tuesday. I had a bit of aggro at first because for some reason in the section where you need to upload a photo for the card it specifies that it needs to be a certain aspect ration (1.29), which is such a bizarre thing to ask for! I’ve worked with images so I have a vauge idea HOW to modify this but still! So i messed around with my photo and got something that was a rather wide image. Unsurprisingly when I tried to upload it I was given the message that it was the wrong size.

Helpfully there is no other indicator as to what size the image is supposed to be. And so I had to phone the Oyster people. After about 5 minutes of automated messages of press 1 for this and press 2 for that I finally got through to a person. And explained that I couldn’t upload my picture for my student Oyster application, and that I’d set it to the aspect ratio it asked for and such. His response? “You’ll just have to guess.” ………

Unsurprisingly I snapped a little! And then the poor chap when off to get some help. A few minutes later he returns and says that I need to set the image to 200 by 240 pixels (which indecently gives you nothing near the aspect ratio asked for). I set my image to this size and bingo! It worked. I don’t understand why they couldn’t, like most places, just give you that information to start with!!! Crazy!!

Anyway I digress, the website told me that it would take about 2 weeks for me to get my card. As they have to check my student status with the university and then they have to issue the card. Fair enough i can deal with that.

What arrived in the post this morning only 3 days later?

Yup my student Oyster! Awesome! :D Cheap travel here I come, now to figure out if i want to just go and buy a 1 year travel card or just get one for a few months. Hmmmm….

So I’ve had Vista for over a month now and I thought maybe I should make some comments on it, sum up my feelings on it.

So why did I opt for Vista in the first place? Well I was buying a new machine and I thought ‘why not’. Initially when Vista came out I was rather iffy about it, but my feelings against it lessoned, especially as a lot of people said ‘Oh no not Vista its rubbish’ without any really good arguments, and I’d read a few blogs saying it wasn’t that bad. And thus i went with Vista.

So today was the introduction at Westminster for my new MSc course, and I have to say I was already pretty impressed with Westminster at the whole being able to enrol online. But now, well it has just showed me that Keele was/is so rubbish.

And now I shall list the examples :)

1)  My Id card, which I can use to pay for printing/photocopying etc  I can top this up ONLINE! (Amazing concept huh?)

2) They have several computer labs with open access. And in the main entrance there is a big screen that shows you the status of the computers there, whether they are in use or unavailable or free!! So no more wondering around rooms to see if there’s an available computer! (WOW)

3) Ack, I’m sure there was more I can’t remember it all at the moment. But yes Westminster is amazing. :)

Only downside so far all my exams are going to be in June, soo lets hope I don’t forget everything.
